WHY PHYSIOTHERAPY IS IMPORTANT AFTER AN INJURY

BY FREE MOTION PHYSIOTHERAPY

The healing power of the human body continues to surprise and amaze us in its ability to repair and restore both function and mobility. The natural healing process cannot be accelerated but by allowing a Physiotherapist to assess your range of motion and movement control, you can promote full recovery and prevent secondary complications. Here are a few things about injury healing you may not have been aware of.

1. Scar Tissue is more likely to form without treatment.

The formation of scar tissue is an essential element to the natural healing process, however an excess of scar tissue following an injury can lead to continued pain and further complications. Physiotherapy treatment can restore movement in the skin, muscles and ligaments through appropriate exercises, massage, and joint mobilisation.

2. Your ability to sense the position of your body, known as proprioception, is inhibited after an injury, but can be stimulated and retrained.

Impaired proprioception in joints following injury can result in ongoing symptoms as well as re-injury. Specific exercises and joint mobilisation can facilitate receptors and restore the bodies positional awareness, which improves range of motion, strength, and function.

3. Once soft tissue healing is complete, your body may not be moving as freely as it did before.

Injuries to soft tissue heal in time, but can leave behind an aftermath of stiff joints, stretched ligaments and weak muscles. These changes can be treated by a Physiotherapist to restore full function and prevent secondary complications from arising.

4. You may have picked up some bad habits while protecting and waiting for your injury to heal.

When we are in pain, our body takes the path of least resistance which can lead to altered movement patterns and muscle imbalances. These habits can remain long after the injury has healed and place strain on joints and muscles in the affected areas. By identifying these changes, a Physiotherapist can aid in restoring optimal movement, correcting imbalances, and improving function.

At Free Motion Physiotherapy we complete a full body assessment of each patient and identify all joints and muscles affected as well as those contributing to your dysfunction or complaint. Our team will discuss options with you and develop a suitable treatment and rehabilitation plan to return you to the best possible function and prevent further injuries.
